Three beginners listened and followed Ilse’s movements as she made a basic upright style moribana. Then, with green materials in front of us, we each began examining our branches, inspecting our blooms and with varying degrees of confidence, began to cut and place them.
We exchanged a few words about how effortless Ilse made it look---even as she made the arrangement from behind so we could see it take shape—
("Sure he [Fred Astaire] was great,
but don't forget Ginger Rogers did everything he did
backwards...and in high heels!")
-- and wondered if we'd ever remember the angles and lengths for Shin, Soe and Hikae. Ilse offered guidance from time to time, but mostly it was quiet. After a time, we had three arrangements, each a very different expression of the "dance" with our flowers.
